E3 2015 – Tales of Zestiria Hands-On Preview: Roaming With Jaggies

Tales of Zestiria

The Tales of series has been a staple of the RPG community for the past 15+ years, turning out solid entry after solid entry. Tales of Zestiria, which is releasing for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 looks to continue that trend when it releases later this year.

My demo time with Zestiria was rather short, granting me just enough time to run around a fairly big field and get into a bunch of random fights with the enemies inhabiting the place. I was actually really impressed with the size of the area I had to roam, though it was a little barren.

One of the biggest surprises I had with my hands on was just how ugly the game looked. I am talking PS2-level jagged edges all over the place. I tried to get a good answer from a rep on exactly what was wrong, but nothing. The demo was playable on PS3 and I am sure the final product won’t look so bad, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

The combat was about what you would expect from a Tales of game. It was fast paced, frenetic action with lots of really cool special moves. The battles played out really smooth outside of the graphical hiccups and it felt really fun to get into each fight. Series veterans will find it right at home while it’s still inviting for newcomers.

Aside from the technical issues with this build, it’s a Tales of game and you know that the final product will be solid. It’s a game to look out for and I really can’t wait to see what it looks like on the PS4. Look for Tales of Zestiria on PlayStation platforms this coming October.
