Diablo 3 & Mafia III PS4 Pro Support Detailed in Analysis
Last week, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition received update 1.15, which added 4K PlayStation 4 Pro support to the PS4 version. In Digital Foundry’s analysis, they discovered that Diablo III on PS4 Pro has dynamic resolution, meaning it ranges from 1080p to 2160p, depending on the setting.
“So for example, you get a true native 4K for indoor areas, like the New Tristram tavern, and even the Cathedral dungeon with no enemies in sight,” Digital Foundry said. They later added, “With a maelstrom of effects and a screen filled with enemies, Diablo III’s renderer scales back down to 1080p on PS4 Pro.”
For the most part, Digital Foundry says PS4 Pro owners with a 4K display will see gameplay in between 1080p and 4K, typically at 1728p or 1872p. If you have a 1080p display, “this output is downscaled to 1080p for a much cleaner look.”
They also noted that the frame-rate on PS4 Pro is locked to 60fps with only minor stutters, and there’s some improvements to ambient occlusion and a more impactful bloom effect. HDR support isn’t included.
As for Mafia III, 2K and developer Hangar 13 never announced that the game received PS4 Pro support in the patch notes, but it appears to have been added with update 1.05 back in December.
Putting Mafia III on PS4 Pro through its paces, Digital Foundry discovered that it runs at 1440p on 4K displays. Those with a 1080p display will “also see the benefit of super-sampling down from the higher internal resolution,” but you’ll still notice a reduction in quality when a pre-rendered cut-scene begins.
Along with some minor shadow quality, motion blur, and draw distance tweaks, Digital Foundry adds that you’ll see 30fps on PS4 Pro most of the time. “Pro keeps the frame-pacing fix and has no tearing at all, running with full v-sync throughout,” they add. “However, in the game’s most taxing areas, this does result in depressed performance compared to the base PlayStation 4 game – something we shouldn’t be seeing.”
