Sony Financials: PS4 Shipped 9.7 Million Units in Q3, Game & Network Sales Rose

In Sony’s third quarter fiscal year 2016 report, they reveal that 9.7 million PlayStation 4s were shipped in the three months ending December 31, 2016, which is the most in a quarter since launch and 1.3 million more than they did in the same quarter last year. Lifetime PS4 shipments now sit at 57.1 million (sales to consumers were at 53.4 million as of January 1).

Sony still expects to ship 20 million PS4s during the entire fiscal year (ending March 31, 2017) – bringing the lifetime total to 60 million – and they only need to ship 2.9 million units this quarter to reach that mark. In Q4 FY15, 2.3 million PS4s were shipped.

Looking at the Game & Network division as a whole, sales were up 5.2% year-on-year to $5.3 billion (USD), which Sony says was “primarily due” due to an increase in PS4 software sales and “the contribution” of PlayStation VR. Sales were partially offset by the PS4 price drop and foreign exchange rates.

Operation income was up 24.5% to $431 million, primarily due to PS4 hardware cost reductions and an increase in PS4 software sales. It was partially offset by the cheaper PS4 price.

As a company, Sony Corporation saw a 7.1% decrease in sales to $20.7 billion.

Sony didn’t offer sales numbers for PlayStation VR or PlayStation Vita.
