BioWare Is the One Keeping Anthem Shrouded in Secrecy

When it comes to Anthem, it has not received the number of the trailers and gameplay walkthroughs people would expect from such a massive release. Apart from the E3 2018 presentation, we haven’t really seen it in action. Some fans may wonder whether this is indicative of EA’s having already lost faith in the title. According to Game Director, Jonathan Warner, BioWare is behind the game’s secrecy.

When he spoke with Metro about Anthem’s minimal exposure, Warner revealed the following:

Without being indiscreet I think it’s really about our choice as developers wanting to bring something and show something that is more full-throated, if you will, at the right time. I think there’s always the temptation to show stuff early and because it’s new, and because we’ve been iterating on it in a very meaningful way we as developers wanted to hold this a little closer to our breast for just a little bit longer, until we could get it to something like the demo that you see.

When asked to clarify whether the decision is BioWare’s alone, Warner described it as “a developer choice.” Later in the interview, he applauded EA’s support.

EA leadership, from studio all the way up to the very, very top of the organisation have been so supportive of this process. And we’re lucky enough to have leaders who know that developing new IP is really hard. As creators it’s one of the most challenging and rewarding things you can do. But it is very difficult and I can honestly say, with no BS, that the process has been hugely supportive. I’m not concerned in the slightest about our marketing, we’re gonna come out and really blow the doors off this thing.

Despite the publisher’s being “pleased” with public interest, concerns that EA lacks faith in Anthem stems from the publisher closing studios that underperform. Following his departure from BioWare, former developer James Ohlen alleviated this worry. Ohlen said he doesn’t think EA will shutter BioWare if Anthem doesn’t meet expectations.

At PAX West, which kicks off on August 31, 2018, more Anthem details will be revealed. During the event, BioWare will host a panel to explain more about the game’s story and multiplayer functions.
