Twin Mirror Features Exploration and Side Stories That Weave Into the Main Story

Twin Mirror opens another chapter in Dontnod’s episodic storytelling ventures. Akin to Life is Strange before it, Twin Mirror takes place in a small town that conceals many secrets. Contrary to the Arcadia Bay-focused title, however, Twin Mirror will allow players to experience these secrets on their own accord. This is all thanks to exploration options and side stories.

During an interview with Wccftech, Twin Mirror’s Writer, Matthew Ritter, and Narrative Producer, Hélène Henry, revealed that some levels will feature open areas. In these areas, players can explore and interact with a variety of characters. Henry explained,

n some levels, you’ll have the possibility to explore the town and talk to the inhabitants. Still, it’s not an open world. It’s just the chance to explore relationships, to see people you haven’t seen for a long time. Sometimes you can have an impact on their lives if you decide to. You can also decide to be a loner if you want. You can go through what you need to do and just what you want to do.

It’s really up to the player to decide how much they want to explore the town and come back to the people that Sam (the protagonist) knew from his past.

When asked whether the townspeople’s stories will affect the game’s core narrative, Ritter revealed the following:

These side stories that can dovetail back in and affect the larger game as a whole. It’s very much trying to tell a story where the town is its own character. Hopefully, getting to know the people there is a large part of the game, if that’s part of what you’re choosing to explore.

Henry chimed in, adding, “It was important for us that it stays intimate. It won’t be a huge town with thousands of people, it’s not that large.”

For now, we’re left to ponder the full scope of Twin Mirror. Thankfully, more details are on the horizon, as the developer recently launched the first part of a dev diary series.

Presently, Twin Mirror does not yet have a release date. Yet, the game’s premiere episode is slated to go live sometime in 2019. For those wanting to dive back into a Dontnod-crafted world, Life is Strange 2 won’t keep you waiting. The sequel’s first episode launches on September 27, 2018.
