Arc System Works Shared a The Missing Q&A Featuring Swery

The Missing is out quite soon, and Arc System Works has released a video featuring director Hidetaka Suehiro, perhaps better known as Swery65. In this video, Suehiro answers several questions about the game, giving information about the story, his White Owls studio, and the age-old question, “what is Swerism?”

The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories is at its core a puzzle-based platformer. As Suehiro describes it, the game’s story follows J.J., who is visiting this mysterious island with her friend Emily, who goes missing. During her search, J.J. gains the power of immortality, or the ability to regenerate her body from injuries.

Using that ability, J.J. is able to solve puzzles through deliberately injuring herself, which is the central theme of the game, that Suehiro and his team designed the game around.

Speaking of the team, Suehiro notes that this is White Owls’ debut, stating that a team of nine people created The Missing, and that White Owls has 12 people total including himself. When asked why he formed a new studio, Suehiro said that he was inspired after traveling and meeting other developers in different countries, and that with multiple years in-between his previous games, he has things he still wants to accomplish.

Finally, when asked what “Swerism” is, Suehiro spoke of deliberately including what he perceives as “meaningful messages” in his games, and that part of Swerism is exploring themes that have never been seen before in the medium.

The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories releases on October 11, 2018.
