Dreams Aims to Make Game Development an Accessible Hobby

Developed by Media Molecule, the makers of LittleBigPlanet, Dreams is best described as a game engine and a game all rolled into one. This creation title boasts that you can make just about anything. In turn, Dreams will be jam-packed with tutorials, as making games is hard. But Media Molecule hopes that it can help make game development an accessible hobby, akin to playing a musical instrument.

Studio Director Siobhan Reddy explained her vision to GamesIndustry.biz and stated that she hopes to make game development as easy “as using a camera, guitar, or a pencil—something you can start to learn just by picking it up.”

All of those artistic hobbies have one common thread: anyone can do them, but true mastery and understanding takes practice. With game development, the tools have always felt foreign and far away to non-developers. As someone who has never dabbled in game development, I’d personally just start googling (somewhat) aimlessly. My issue is not knowing what tools I need to make my specific visions a reality. Dreams aims to solve that problem.

With Dreams, everything you need is right in front of you within the friendly package of a video game. And if you don’t want to create, that’s fine too. You can always just play the campaign and other people’s creations.

Pick up Dreams when the beta launches sometime in 2018. And until then, be sure to read our hands-on preview.
