Japan – PS3 Dominates, Wii and 360 Fall Behind

During the five weeks of March, Sony’s PlayStation 3 was able to supplant the Wii as the number one selling hardware in Japan. This sudden turn of events is proof of how fast Sony can turn around disappointing sales, and the answer was simply games that captivated a specific audience. Sega and Capcom especially deserve a round of applause for their respective releases of Yakuza 3 and Resident Evil 5, which drove PS3 hardware sales in the region.

The Wii fell to second place, but it’s hard to tell whether this was due to a lack of compelling software, or if the Japanese market is simply stagnating. With its low price tag and high volume of sales over the past two years, it’s possible that most Japanese gamers who wanted a Wii already have one. A similar situation happened with the DS handheld, but we’ll see how April and May compare.

Here is the final tally:

  • PlayStation 3 – 146,948

  • Wii – 99,335

  • Xbox 360 – 43,172
