Welcome Back Package Propels inFAMOUS 2 to Monstrous Success

It wasn’t long ago that the PlayStation Network was down for a few weeks, and the world was seemingly coming to an end. Sony promptly offered the Welcome Back program which was not only a huge win for consumers, but apparently Sucker Punch Productions as well.

inFAMOUS was offered as one of five free downloads for over a month following the Welcome Back program instated by Sony, and was immediately downloaded by thousands of consumers who had never experienced the new electric, action-packed IP created by Sucker Punch Productions. Within the same timeframe, its sequel, inFAMOUS 2, released on store shelves along with overwhelmingly positive reception by critics. It appears that offering inFAMOUS for free to new consumers was enough to spark a handful of sales, accelerating the game to the very top of this Summer’s most downloaded games on PSN.

Below are Summer 2011’s top ten most downloaded games on PSN:

    1. inFAMOUS 2

    2. Assassin’s Creed II Deluxe Edition

    3. Outland

    4. Might & Magic Clash of Heroes

    5. SEGA Rally Online Arcade

    6. Streets of Rage 2

    7. Beyond Good & Evil HD

    8. Dungeon Hunter: Alliance

    9. Arcana Heart 3

    10. Alien Zombie Megadeath

What’s makes this especially noteworthy is that inFAMOUS 2 is the only game on the list that has been sold at a full price of $59.99, which typically makes it less compelling to the masses than smaller, more affordable titles. Needless to say, inFAMOUS 2 has done incredibly well, and has kept the PlayStation 3 ahead of the competition during the slow Summer.

Sucker Punch Productions was recently cast into the Sony family, and will continue to produce first-party exclusives for the PlayStation platform. We look forward to seeing what they have in store for the future now that they’re officially under Sony’s umbrella.
