PAX East 2015 – Adventures of Pip Hands-On Preview (PS4)

Adventures of Pip is an upcoming 2D platformer that revolves around a young boy, Pip, as he tries to save the day and destroy the evil Skeleton Queen. At PAX East 2015, I was able to sit down with Tic Toc Games and play a bit of the game myself, and it looks like it will be worth picking up.

Set to possibly come out in May for PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 (with the Steam early access version coming out in the next few weeks), Adventures of Pip puts a unique twist on the tradition platformer. See, Pip gets some pretty unique powers in the game — he is able to transform into three different versions of himself. He starts off as a little block, and is only able to jump high and move around fairly quickly, but can only jump on enemies’ heads to kill them, as he has no attack. This is his ‘tiny’ form, in which he is able to squeeze through small crevices and other various spaces.

After a while, the little block version of Pip will be able to transform into his ‘agile’ form, the quickest form, and Pip will be able to attack things and jump off of walls, but he will no longer be able to fit through narrow spaces. Lastly, Pip has his ‘strength’ form, which allows him to break down certain walls with his attacks, although his movement speed decreases dramatically. Players will have to know when to use which transformation, and will be able to devolve at will, going from the ‘strength’ form to the ‘agile’ form to the ‘tiny’ form. The evolve, players need to kill enemies.

Adventures of Pip is fairly fast-paced, and has a nice combination of puzzle solving and bad guy crushing. While the demo I played was short, the developers assured me the final version will be much longer when it (hopefully) releases in May.
