ARM: Mobile Visuals Will Be on Par With PS4, Xbox One by 2018

Mobile devices will reach a graphical parity with PS4 and Xbox One by the end of 2017, according to ARM Ecosystem Director Nizar Romdan.

Speaking at the Casual Connect event in Amsterdam (via GamesIndustry), the executive claimed that mobile hardware has already surpassed the visual standards set by PS3 and Xbox 360, and that it’s only a matter of time before ARM produces mobile chips capable of matching — or even surpassing — current-gen systems.

That said, Romdan acknowledged that battery and design limitations will come into play, and that there will always be a demand for consoles. But with the advent of virtual reality, Romdan added that he expects the introduction of VR on mobile to instigate a transition of hardcore players onto smartphone and tablet platforms.

“Our view is that mobile VR is the use case that could unlock the potential of mobile for hardcore gamers. For once, mobile devices are on par with PC and consoles in terms of experience. We won’t have the same processing. And battery life is a problem. But it is the same user experience. That could be a game changer for mobile gaming.”
