Cyberpunk 2077 Gender Fluidity

CD Projekt Red Discusses Gender Identity Elements in Cyberpunk 2077

It’s hard to imagine a video game news day without the mention of Cyberpunk 2077. August 27, 2018 has been teeming with tidbits already. For example, we got to see the E3 2018 footage for the first time. We also have a better idea of how CD Projekt Red will handle gender and gender fluidity in Cyberpunk 2077.

In a recent interview with Philipp Weber, Cyberpunk 2077‘s Senior Quest Designer, he talks about how gender might be handled within the game. The name of the lead character is one of the things mentioned. People will be stepping into V’s shoes, which is a rather neutral moniker. Weber pointed out, “That’s why we chose that name, because V works for male, works for female and we thought it would be a good option…” He went on to confirm that it would also work well for people choosing to play V as a gender neutral character.

As far as pronouns go, Weber did not specify if he/she/they will be present as options. However, he did reference how Cyberpunk 2020 handled the topic. When it came to how Cyberpunk 2077 will handle the possible option, he stated, “What I can say was that it was a part of Cyberpunk 2020 but how exactly we’ll do it in Cyberpunk 2077 I don’t know yet. But it is definitely a thing we are aware of.”

The concept of body type came up as well. While talking about how someone would be able to portray a gender fluid character, the idea of character creation and selecting a body type came up. When asked if Cyberpunk 2077 will refer to types by male or female labels, Weber said, “I think the way it is right now, we’re not saying either. We’re basically showing it to you and you choose which of the bodies you have as the basis to then go on and make the character.”

CD Projekt Red seems to be working hard to build hype and perhaps attempt to make the game more inclusive. Especially since the developer has also been talking about the transhumanism elements in the game. How do you feel about Cyberpunk 2077, based on what we know so far?
