Tekken 8 Announced at State of Play

Tekken 8 has been announced as the first game in today’s PlayStation State of Play, featuring an incredible cinematic battle between Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima. The cinematic teaser trailer showed the father and son fighting on a rocky platform without any HUD. No release date for the game has been announced apart from the trailer asking us to “stay tuned.” Tekken 8 will release on PS5 and likely other platforms that haven’t been revealed yet.

What we can glean from the short Tekken 8 teaser

There isn’t too much to grab from the trailer itself. The graphics look fantastic, with the muscularity of both characters having a lot of detail and the particle effects looking great with every impact. As usual, we see the Mishima/Kazam family used as the focus of the franchise, and we see both characters use signature juggle sequences to unleash deadly heaps of damage. Jin says that people like him and his father shouldn’t exist, suggesting that their devil powers are just too powerful.

One curious note is that Jin seems to use his Devil Power against his father without having to transform into Devil Jin, perhaps signifying that he has intrinsic access to his more powerful moveset. Then chains appear near the end of the trailer, with two chain-like links appearing together to form the “8” in the Tekken 8 logo.

Tekken 8 was teased by The Game Awards in August at EVO 2022, coming at the end of a trailer announcing a new free update for Tekken 7 that will bring balance adjustments and new tactics.

In other news, Octopath Traveler 2 is headed to PS5 and PS4 in 2023, and Sony will reportedly reveal a new AAA IP within a few weeks.
