A recent PS Plus Essential free horror game is taking PS5 players by surprise, many of whom have declared that it’s severely underrated. 2024’s Alone in the Dark missed the mark when it launched, resulting in developer Pieces Interactive shutting down. Now, players say the hate wasn’t deserved.
2024 horror game Alone in the Dark was a PS Plus June 2025 free game
Alone in the Dark was handed out for free back in June, so unless you forgot to claim it, the game should be in your library regardless of your subscription tier. Like many, I added the title to my library and forgot about it until I came across some intense chatter on gaming forums over the weekend.
“Alone in the Dark (2024) is criminally underrated,” a subscriber wrote in a popular Reddit thread. “After playing it for a while I can safely say it’s a great survival horror game.”
Surprisingly, a large number of members agreed. While acknowledging Alone in the Dark’s issues, players agreed that it’s a fun game and its developer deserved another chance.
“It seems people are, in general, very harsh towards most survival horror style games,” a player opined, noting that The Medium received similar treatment and its developer Bloober Team went on to make the hit Silent Hill 2 remake.
Another player brought up Murdered: Soul Suspect, which quickly caught my attention. For the uninitiated, the game was released in 2014 to a similar reception that Alone in the Dark received, leading to its studio Airtight Games shutting down.
Murdered: Soul Suspect has since been slashed down to a few bucks on the PS Store quite a few times, and like many, I quite enjoyed the game when I did finally end up playing it.
