PS5 Remake of Beloved PS3 Action Game Gets Divisive Reviews

A new PS5 remake of a beloved PS3 action game has debuted to some relatively divisive reviews.

What PS5 remake is getting divisive reviews?

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, a new remake of the 2009 PS3 game Yakuza 3 with a brand new DLC, is set to release on February 11, 2026, on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The game features a new look on the original game, and despite some strong recommendations, the game’s reviews still feature some divisive opinions.

On the review aggregating site OpenCritic, the game has debuted to a 75 score amongst critics. Although the game still has a 72% “critics recommend” score, many reviews are split on whether or not the game lives up to 2009’s original.

In Tristant Ogilvie’s 7 out of 10 review for IGN, he notes the game is yet “another enjoyable blend of hard-boiled drama and sidestory silliness, but as a package it’s not quite as well-rounded as the series’ more accomplished entries.”

Nintendo Life’s Oliver Reynolds, who gave the game a 6 out of 10, calls the game “a fair series entry,” but criticizes it for being “tainted by poor pacing and a recasting controversy that simply didn’t need to happen.”

DualShockers’ Usama Mehmood‘s 7.5 out of 10 review similarly noted that he was “torn between appreciation and disappointment, because it’s occasionally brilliant yet so undeniably polarizing at some levels, serving as fine evidence for me that not every black sheep in a series needs to be remade.”

Despite the divisive reviews, some did find the game a worthy new candidate in the franchise. On our sister site, ComingSoon, Tyler Treese scored the game a 9 out of 10, saying it “plays much better then the original.”

“Featuring the new Dark Ties expansion, a meaningful story that fleshes out one of the series’ most interesting villains, and a ton of new side content, there’s no doubt that fans have received a fulfilling package. It’ll be interesting to see how RGG goes from here, as a remake of 4 now seems necessary, but for now, fans can enjoy one of the series’ best games lovingly enhanced.”
