PS Plus Extra, Premium users are warned not to download a new PS5 game without checking their libraries first. As promised, Team Cherry added Hollow Knight‘s native PS5 port to the catalog this morning. However, if you download it, you might override your permanent monthly free game license from November 2020.
Downloading Hollow Knight PS5 via PS Plus Extra may override the permanent free game license
If you’re a regular reader, you know what we’re talking about. If you’re new here, sit down for a minute while I repeat myself.
Players who redeem monthly games (now called Essential) and then download them later from the PS Plus Extra catalog are locked out of those games for good. Essential/monthly games are yours to keep, but Extra/Premium games are not. If you re-download a game from Extra that you previously claimed via Essential, you will override your license. So, once those games leave Extra, you can’t play them again unless you purchase them.
Enter Hollow Knight. The game was offered as a monthly freebie at a time when we didn’t have three tiers. Many may have forgotten that they claimed it back in November 2020. For some reason, the new PS5 port is only available to Extra and Premium subscribers. It’s not available to those who claimed it from the monthly lineup.
So, there may be a temptation to access Hollow Knight PS5 via Extra. But if you do that, you may lose the permanent version you have and subsequently lose access when the game departs the catalog.
Consider yourself warned.
