Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War!, from Auroch Digital, Dotemu, and Game Source Entertainment, is out today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The new game is a retro-styled FPS that throws players into the battle against the Arachnid Menace, and actually allows you to play as them for the first time ever.
On OpenCritic, Ultimate Bug War has a 78 rating, with 65% of critics recommending the game. Many of the positive reviews for the title praise the game’s entertaining retro feel, its design choices harkening back to games of old, and the ability to play as either troopers or bugs, offering up some fun gameplay moments.
PlayStation Universe’s Garri Bagdasarov called the game “a fun shooter with a fantastic presentation. It doesn’t do anything major or push the genre forward, but it provides a fun, entertaining experience with one of the more memorable franchises on the market.”
TechRaptor’s Austin Suther said, “If you want to shoot a bunch of bugs, cause a ton of explosions, and watch some genuinely funny cutscenes all through the lens of an in-universe highly propagandized video game, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! might just be for you. While it has its flaws (namely, squad gameplay, objective variety, and the Bug mode), it’s entertaining to say the least.”
ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese was also positive, noting, “while Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! can be uneven in spots throughout its two campaigns, there is no doubt that it wonderfully understands the appeal of the franchise and makes the most of the license. Featuring a hilarious and meta story element that shines in the live-action cutscenes, any Starship Troopers fan will want to check this retro FPS out.”
