In an unusual move, the PS Store is automatically issuing refunds for a PS5 game that unceremoniously shut down in less than two months. Highguard was a free-to-play shooter with microtransactions that launched in late January 2026, only to be shut down on March 12.
PS Store currently the only storefront issuing refunds for Highguard microtransactions
Players who made in-game purchases are being fully refunded, which took everyone by surprise because the PS Store is notorious for denying refunds.
Several players reported on social media and gaming forums that they received their money back (thanks, ResetEra), so it’s not an isolated case, nor does this seem limited to a specific region.
According to a ResetEra user who also received a full refund, Sony is the only company returning players’ money. It’s unclear if Steam and Microsoft plan to follow suit.
Highguard was revealed back in December 2025 during The Game Awards. It received a prime spot as the show’s final reveal, which many have argued kick-started negative discourse surrounding the game, which ultimately contributed to its demise.
However, players have rightfully pointed out that Highguard launched in an oversaturated market and failed to impress. Negative reactions to its reveal had little to no impact on its launch reception.
