Long-Awaited PS5 Open World Game Gets Strong Reviews

A long-awaited PlayStation 5 open world game is officially out today, and it has debuted to strong, yet divisive, reviews.

What long awaited PS5 game has gotten average reviews?

On OpenCritic, Crimson Desert debuted to an 80 overall average score, a high mark for any game but one that has drawn divisive reactions. Although 81% of critics recommend the title, the excitement around Crimson Desert has led the score to be viewed a bit more negatively.

Most of the reviews for Crimson Desert praise the game’s massive open world and sheer breadth of things to do. However, many, even the most positive reviews, criticize the game’s many mechanics and lack of a strong enough narrative to carry the highly anticipated title.

PCGamer’s Mollie Taylor, who scored the game an 80, noted it was “vast and obtuse in a way that is going to frustrate some and exhilarate others, Crimson Desert is a fascinating journey, even when the destination isn’t all that.”

GameSpot’s Richard Wakeling, who scored the game a 7 out of 10, said “it might not always be the most cohesive game, mixing high fantasy with steampunk and sci-fi elements, but there’s nothing else quite like it, and I can’t help but be impressed by how little restraint Pearl Abyss has shown in its commitment to delightful absurdity. In some respects, Crimson Desert might not be too good to be true, but it’s a world worth getting lost in.”

Tom’s Guide’s Tony Polanco gave the game a 4 out of 5 and said “the story is pretty average, and the beginning can be brutal, but if you’re the kind of person who loves big, sandbox adventures, this one is worth the ride.” VG247’s James Billcliffe‘s 3 out of 5 review also noted “as it stands on release, the best parts of Crimson Desert are buried deep under layers of absurdity.”

DualShockers’ Christian Bognar praised the game, noting in his 9.5 out of 10 review that “it’s simply one of the biggest games I have ever played, with an astonishing amount of high-quality content, an absurd amount of complex puzzles, and a world so gigantic that I still haven’t come close to seeing everything after 100 hours of playtime. While the story isn’t the best and some bosses seem downright unfair, those flaws do little to diminish Crimson Desert, an absolute marvel and one of the best open-world games on the market.”
