A classic arcade video game is getting a sequel decades later, with the game’s PlayStation 5 release date officially set.
What arcade shooter is getting a PS5 sequel?
Truxton, a 1988 vertical scrolling shooter originally released in Japanese and European arcades, is coming back in the form of Truxton Extreme, a new game developed by Tatsujin and published by Clear River Games AB. The new game actually serves as a sequel to Truxton II.
The game will be released on July 30 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The new release will not only have a digital release, but will also launch with physical editions as well, with a special Deluxe Edition available. Tatsujin also worked with the original mastermind behind Truxton, Masahiro Yuge, on Truxton Extreme.
A new trailer for the game was also released, highlighting some of the new visuals and action fans can expect from the series. Check it out below:
Alongside the 3D rendered game, Truxton Extreme also features reimagined tracks from the original 1988 game and 18 chapters of arcade action from artist Junya Inoue. The original game sees players taking on the role of a fighter pilot, Tatsuo, as he takes control of the Super Fighter ship and fights against alien invaders.
Truxton Extreme will feature a variety of modes alongside its traditional story mode, including an arcade mode, team mode, and more, including:
- Story – Combining action and comics, Story Mode takes players through the main game of Truxton Extreme to unlock episodes, read comics and clear shmup stages.
- Arcade – In true arcade style Arcade Mode is pure unrelenting action in which players clear all stages in sequence.
- Heart Starter – A more forgiving mode, Heart Starter is recommended for beginners to get used to the game. Players will recover from enemy hits in a few seconds and won’t lose lives, even if they make mistakes.
- Team – Take on the Geranium invasion together! Team Mode allows two-player co-op, sharing their bombs, their lives and their scores. Players can rescue each other too.
- Arena – A 2-minute time trial, Arena Mode sets the challenge of defeating as many enemies as possible to get the highest score.
- Pipiruville – Defeat enemies during the game to rescue Pipiru aliens, keep at it and players will unlock Pipiruville and develop their village. Check in and see them!
