Xbox’s New PS5 Action Game Port Gets Strong Reviews

An award-winning action game previously only available on Xbox is out now on PS5, and getting strong reviews after its launch.

What Xbox action game port is getting strong reviews?

South of Midnight, the action-adventure game originally released in 2025, is available now on PlayStation 5. On Metacritic, the game has launched to strong reviews, scoring an 80 amongst the six reviews that have been published for the PS5 version. Most of the praise of the game notes the fantastic setting and soundtrack for the game, as well as its Southern Gothic Folklore-inspired story.

PlayStation Lifestyle’s Tyler Treese praised the game, saying it “features a well-told and gorgeously animated story that is worth experiencing. Its mythological Deep South setting is a joy to see depicted so lovingly, and its unique combat keeps the game fun. While it’s not Xbox’s best PS5 outing, as it can get slightly repetitive, action-adventure game fans will want to check it out.”

The game follows the story of Hazel, a woman who learns she has an ancient weaving power. The game heavily incorporates various Deep South mythos, and sees Hazel battling against “Haints.”

The game was originally released on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and was praised for its unique art style. South of Midnight emulates a stop-motion animation style for its cutscenes, something that earned it both praise and awards when it was originally released.

At The Game Awards 2025, South of Midnight took home the award for Games for Impact. The game also won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Animation at the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, and also won an Annie Award for Best Character Animation in a Video Game.

South of Midnight is just one of several Xbox games that has been making its way to the PlayStation 5 over the past couple of months. The game joins other formerly Xbox exclusive titles like Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Halo, and more as all making the jump across the console barrier.
