New PS5 UI Explained: Who Has the Update and What’s Different

A few days ago, PlayStation LifeStyle was the first outlet to report that Sony is rolling out a new PS5 UI update for April 2026. What followed was a ton of confusion and misleading headlines about the changes, what the “update” entails, and who it’s being rolled out to. This article offers clarification to those who are still confused.

April 2026’s PS5 UI update is not in beta, contrary to claims

Our original report came from a Reddit thread in which a user had shared a screenshot of their new UI without any context.

Firstly, the update is not in beta, like the original Reddit thread led news outlets to believe. We updated our original article to note this, as we noticed a few more threads from players who received the update and aren’t PS5 beta program participants. Secondly, there’s no update to “download.”

As we mentioned in an addendum to our previous article, the changes are being rolled out via a server-side feature update that doesn’t require players to download or opt into anything.

Sony is known to stagger the rollout of new features and system software updates. The UI update is not live in all regions and is not available to all players. You can’t force download anything. And no, the screenshots you’re seeing online aren’t “fake” or “AI-generated.”

Last but not least, we’ve seen some comments from users who are convinced that they’ve had the new UI for at least a year. We can see where this confusion comes from, so here’s a quick video demonstration courtesy of X user Lord_PSMG that actually highlights what has changed, followed by our explanation:

The current UI has only two tabs up top, above the game and app tiles: Games and Media. Sony has replaced these two tabs with several tabs — one each for the PS Store, PS Plus, Games, Library, and Media. Each tab is represented by tiny icons rather than text.

Players can switch between the aforementioned tabs using the L1 and R1 buttons on their PS5 DualSense controller.

This is all that’s new. This update has nothing more to offer, and has nothing to do with themes.

We will notify our readers when the UI update sees a wider rollout.
