THQ Nordic has announced that the Gothic trilogy of games will be returning to the PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S later this year. The first game will release on July 28, 2026, with the second game releasing on September 29, and the final game releasing on November 24. The Gothic series is an action role-playing franchise created by German developer Piranha Bytes. The series has been known for its immersive and reactive world, with NPCs often responding dynamically to the player’s actions. The original game released in 2001, with a sequel in 2002 and a third game in 2006. A spin-off, titled Arcania, was released in 2010.
The original Gothic was well received by critics and is notable for being one of the first RPGs worldwide that featured fully voiced dialogue. The game also became famous due to its international modding community.
The story of Gothic follows players going on an adventure in a medieval fantasy realm. In an effort to win a war against orcs, the king sends every criminal into ore mines, which does not turn out well and sets the stage for the entire game.
