PS Plus Extra and Premium Get 7-Day Free Trial for New Subscribers in Some Regions

Sony has quietly added a free PS Plus Extra/Premium 7-day free trial for new subscribers in some regions. You will need to add a mode of payment like a credit card to avail the offer, which applies to all three plans: one month, three months, and twelve months. Once the trial period is up, you’ll be charged a monthly fee according to the plan you picked unless you cancel.

Who can avail the free PS Plus Extra/Premium trial?

For starters, you’ll have to be totally new to PS Plus. Returning customers, regardless of how long it’s been since you last renewed your subscription, are not eligible to avail the offer. However, nothing stops players from creating a brand new PSN account and giving the tiers a go. As spotted by folks over at XGP, the offer is currently only available in European regions. We visited the United States’ website and didn’t see the free trial prompt.

As an example, for folks in the United Kingdom, here’s how the PS Plus Extra trial works out:

  • 1-month subscription: Start your 7-day free trial then pay £10.99 a month until cancellation
  • 3-month subscription: Start your 7-day free trial then pay £31.99 every three months until cancellation
  • 12-month subscription: Start your 7-day free trial then pay £83.99 every twelve months until cancellation

It’s unclear if the offer will be rolled out in other regions or not. The free trial currently doesn’t apply to the Essential tier, which is the most basic tier. Sony previously offered free trials for what was previously the equivalent of PS Plus Essential, but considering PS5 owners are practically forced to subscribe to Essential if they want to back up their save data to Cloud storage in the absence of USB backups, Sony probably doesn’t feel the need to extend the offer to this tier.

In other news, we finally have some God of War Ragnarok story details, and an ex EA boss has drawn ire for suggesting that microtransactions should be baked into game development.
