New Super Lucky’s Tale (PS5) Review: Charming Platformer Gets Enhanced

New Super Lucky’s Tale was released in 2019, as an enhanced remake of the platformer Super Lucky’s Tale, which itself was a sequel to the VR game Lucky’s Tale. Now, another layer to its complicated history has been released as it has received a great PS5 port, which doesn’t add new content but does make it run and look better than before. While it’s not exactly living up to the “new” in the title in 2026, it’s the definitive version of the underrated platformer, and fans of Astro Bot will want to check it out.

I’ll go over the PS5 enhancements first, so those who played the game before will know if it’s worth jumping back in. While there are no new levels, sadly, it does feature a number of boosts, such as 4K support and running at 120 frames per second. The added detail and higher frame rate make the game look and run great, as its cute yet simple art style really shines due to the colorful environments. DualSense support has also been added, which feels great when you’re burrowing and adds to the game’s charm.

New Super Lucky’s Tale is largely a throwback 3D platformer as it values simplicity and a good time. Lucky can jump and whip foes with his tail, but the real unique mechanic is being able to burrow underground. Otherwise, it’s all about collecting pages, picking up coins to buy new outfits, and figuring out ways to get past enemies. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s all a very fun time thanks to well-designed foes and colorful environments.

Beyond its solid platforming core, there is also a really nice variety to New Super Lucky’s Tale. Most of the stages feature a nice degree of exploration, although some are a 2D throwback, and others feature the adorable character always moving in a single direction. There’s also a lot of small puzzle stages, which are quite fun (although the motion controls for the marble mini-game didn’t feel great).

New Super Lucky’s Tale never gets boring and doesn’t get repetitive either. It’s a lean game, totalling around seven hours long, and only a few additional hours are needed for cleanup if you’re going for the Platinum. This is one of the game’s biggest strengths, as the variety and always-solid platforming make it a fun game that you can finish in just a handful of sessions.

The final new addition to the PS5 port of New Super Lucky’s Tale is the ability to import save data from the PS4 version of the game. This works flawlessly, but don’t expect a Platinum trophy to auto-pop afterwards. Instead, you’ll have to redo certain things, such as getting at least one of the collectibles for its corresponding trophy to unlock. It certainly saves you time from starting from scratch, but it is a bit confusing for trophy hunters to navigate.

New Super Lucky’s Tale (PS5) Review: Final Verdict

The PS5 version of New Super Lucky’s Tale is its best console port yet. It plays like a dream at 120 fps and at 4K resolution, allowing for the charming platformer to really shine. If you haven’t checked it out yet, this is certainly the version to get.

  • A joyful platformer
  • Looks and plays great
  • Doesn't overstay its welcome
  • Trophy popping from imported saves is weird
