SCEA Lays Out Strategy for Expanding PS3 Userbase

With the PS3 entering its third year on the market, it looks like Sony’s long term strategy is coming into fruition. Though their immediate lineup includes the likes of Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and God of War III, Sony also has plans to bring in alternate demographics. SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller had this to say:

“There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.

We’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcore’s purchased. We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.”

This is very similar to what they did with the PS2 during its later years, and shows that SCE is determined to expand the PS3 userbase by injecting more variety into its gaming catalog. We saw hints of this with last year’s EyePet trailer, and E3 2009 should give us a more solid view of what’s to come.
