PS3 Review – Assassin’s Creed II

There are a few options for transportation available in 15th century Italy. Traveling on foot is the most common one, but outside the city’s walls the user can go on horseback. A trip to the “Fast Travel Station” allows for near instant travel, and later in the game you will be given the ability to fly with the assistance of a large winged device.

Ubisoft has provided many distractions from the main quest in Assasin’s Creed II. These sidequests include races, assassination contracts, beat up events, and courier assignments. Personally, I found the assassination contracts most enjoyable. Each new mark is introduced with a little backstory on why they are being “taken care of.” Beat up events will test your combat training, races allow you to practice your proficiency with high speed free running, and courier assignments basically have you playing mailman for the Italian elite, and they all have a deadline.

As for Desmond, there is more to do in the present day world than in the previous installment. In the original, Desmond was completely restricted to one area, but much more of the “real world” is revealed in the sequel. There is quite a bit more depth to the story. It is essentially up to you how much you actually want to learn when you take into account all the sidequests and information that can be retrieved via the menu. On occasion you will be treated to a video about a key character that you are about to assassinate.

While traversing the city streets of Italy you will encounter various people and entertainers. The cities really come to life with various conversations going on in the background which help fill out the ambiance. While you climb around, people will comment on your antics. Occasionally a pick pocket will pop up and grab up some of your coin. It’s up to you to chase him down if you want the money back.

Overall the game fixes virtually all the problems that Assassin’s Creed had and adds a solid story with more options and gameplay that will keep you coming back for more. The amount of time you can invest in the game to accomplish everything is high, and well worth the price of admission. This is a must have for any Action/Adventure fan and a great addition to any PlayStation 3 owner’s library.
