.hack Developer Helps Create Soul Calibur V’s Story Mode

There’s nothing like a slow trickle of information to help keep anticipation fresh in a gamer’s mind, and it seems the Soul Calibur V team is doing just that, having released a new trailer and information regarding the story mode’s development.

We just saw a huge group of Soul Calibur V screens earlier this week, but screenshots always pale in comparison to a video showing a game in action. The new trailer gives us some brief information about the premise of the story, which of course implies that the Soul Calibur has not in fact lost its power, and may still pose a threat to the world 17 years after the events of Soul Calibur IV. Within it we can see several characters in action, and of particular interest is Natsu, Taki’s apprentice, and Zwei, and mysterious sword wielding character.

The trailer has been accompanied by information from an unexpected source. Hiroshi Matsuyama, CEO of CyberConnect2, has announced that his team is actively working with Project Soul on the story mode of Soul Calibur V, and specifically are helping with the storyboards. While CyberConnect2 is well known for their work on the .hack series and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2, Matsuyama made it a point that Naruto would not be appearing as a guest in the game, despite previous announcements that there will be guest characters appearing.

Besides these revelations, Soul Calibur V producer at Hisaharu Toga announced that Taki is not dead, and they simply wanted to show off her new apprentice first. Taki has aged 17 years, and may not be as perky a ninja as once before, but hopefully is still a force to be reckoned with. He elaborated that Natsu is not a clone of Taki either, and will have her own diverse move set which will include plenty of teleportation moves. Toga also mentioned that Zwei’s name means “two,” which isn’t much of a clue to his nature. However, he can be seen at the very end of the trailer above summoning a torso shaped phantom while yelling “Come forth!” Perhaps the “two” is referring to this ability, but at the moment this is pure speculation. Hopefully the team continues to tease us with more info, because the emo looking Zwei just became interesting for the first time.
