DOOM 4 Rumored to Be Benched; Bethesda Claims False

Originally announced back in 2008, DOOM 4 was put on the back-burner while id Software finished cooking up their latest creation, RAGE. But according an anonymous source, “issues and reviews” around the recently released RAGE has caused publisher Bethesda to postpone the development of DOOM 4. Bethesda says these rumors are false — but what’s the truth here?

At a recent meeting in Dallas, the source claims that Bethesda and parent company Zenimax decided to postpone the title. The source, which spoke to Kotaku, said that the mixed reviews showed Bethesda that there was “a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id.” This lack of confidence may have caused DOOM 4 to be reevaluated.

Although RAGE sports an impressive 82 Metacritic score on PS3, 360, and PC, it received some rather critical reviews around the ‘net, and some fan outcry over the PC version.

Pete Hines at Bethesda has taken to the internet, and more specifically Twitter, to call bullshit on these rumors.

Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed – indefinitely or otherwise.

It’s always safest to take the word of the company involved over an anonymous source, but there’s always three sides to every story. What are your thoughts?
