Newell on HL3: “The Twists and Turns That We’re Going Through Would Probably Drive People More Crazy”

While fans eagerly wait for any bit of news regarding the next installment in the Half-Life series, the team over at Valve is furiously working away to create the best possible experience. As such, the development process has been one full of ups and downs, a roller coaster that Valve boss Gabe Newell wishes to shield gamers from.

Speaking to Seven Day Cooldown podcast on the progress of “Ricochet 2” (aka Half-Life 3), Newell made it clear that the studio wants to be as forthcoming as possible without giving out too many details in advance, as stuff has (and likely will continue) to change throughout the development process.

In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance we end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff, so as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.

Newell goes on to add that because of the game’s “the twists and turns” in development, staying silent about the HL3 will likely drive people less crazy than actually taking them on this journey of ups and downs. While some fans may disagree, Newell makes a pretty good point here. The gaming community is a passionate crowd, and one that would erupt in conversation every time news would break about a change in HL3’s development.

Thanks Gabe for sparing us from all the drama.
