Treyarch Details Leveling System and Unlocks in Black Ops 2

Black Ops developer Treyarch has just released a few new details on the leveling and unlock system attached to the multiplayer of their upcoming sequel, Black Ops 2.

According to Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar on the Black Ops 2 forums, the level cap will be set to 55, but leveling up will likely be “easier” than in prior games “because you earn more XP than ever before with our Medals, Challenges we make available to you, as well as the leveling up guns themselves which grant bonus XP.”

Once players hit level 4, they’ll be able to create a class, and gaining a level grants you one token, which you can use to purchase various upgrades. In addition, players will get to equip “about a dozen things” without having to spend tokens — basically one from each of these categories:

  • 1 Assault Rifle
  • 1 SMG
  • 1 LMG
  • 1 Shotgun
  • 1 Sniper Rifle
  • 1 Perk from each of the 3 perk categories
  • 1 lethal grenade
  • 1 tactical grenade/equipment

Leveling up again will grant you a perk, and level 6 gets you new equipment. Level 7 opens up Scorestreaks, at which point you get three for free and then can spend tokens for more. The next level gets you another perk, and reaching level 9 will give you yet another Scorestreak.

Once you reach level 10, they system falls into a repeating pattern of sorts that starts off like this:

  • Level 10 – Weapon + Something Else
  • Level 11 – Equipment (either lethal or tatical).
  • Level 12 – Scorestreak

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is set to launch on November 13th.
