Best PS3 Exclusive of 2012 Award

Winner: Starhawk

The PlayStation 3 as a console has been defined by its exclusives, which is why I never thought I’d be handing this award to Starhawk. It’s a good game by its own merits, but compared to the quality seen in previous years, it doesn’t quite cut it. And if this category wasn’t restricted to retail releases, Journey would have stolen all the glory. We even considered PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, but its availability on the PS Vita kept it from truly being PS3-exclusive.

Out of all of the PS3 exclusives released this year, Starhawk is the stand-out. Starhawk does multiplayer right. Cooperative interaction and strategy is a must to win, and to really get the most out of your experience. Building structures and creating arms of war on the fly is as charming as it is helpful. It’s done extremely well, and this unique aspect helps to set Starhawk aside from other third-person, multiplayer shooters. The story mode surprised, offering both an enjoyable plot and invaluable training that can be applied to the bulk of the action—in the multiplayer modes.
