BioWare: Dragon Age III is “Stunningly Beautiful” Thanks to Frostbite

Instead of using BioWare’s rapidly aging Eclipse engine for Dragon Age III: Inquisition, the studio is making use of Frostbite 2, and the benefits are readily evident.

In an interview with OXM, BioWare’s Neil Thompson praised the Frostbite 2 engine, saying:

Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 were both done using BioWare’s own Eclipse engine, and it was starting to creak a little bit when Dragon Age 2 came out. Inquisition is being done on the Frostbite 2 engine and it is an astonishingly powerful engine.

The Dragon Age artists were always slightly disappointed at how their work was visualised in the final product with Eclipse, but with Frostbite, they’ve just done some amazing stuff.

Thompson went on to tout how visually impressive Dragon Age III will be, assuring gamers that they will be blown away by the visuals. “There was a pre-production period where almost on a weekly basis I’d be sitting in the environment reviews and being blown away by what was coming out – it looks stunningly beautiful. So I think when we do start releasing screenshots, people won’t be disappointed.”

We still don’t know when Dragon Age III will be released or what platforms it will launch on. Is it safe to say this is a next-gen title? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
