Don’t Starve: Giant Edition Headed to PS Vita, Won’t Include Cross-Buy

Releasing at the very beginning of the year on PlayStation 4 was Don’t Starve from Klei, with the developers saying at that time, “We’re focusing on getting PS4 out first, but we think it would be neat [on PS Vita] too! We’re looking at if it’s possible to do. Maybe? haha.”

Well, it turns out Don’t Starve on PS Vita is possible, as Klei has announced that Don’t Starve: Giant Edition is coming to PlayStation Vita. There’s no release date as of yet, but the game will include Don’t Starve, the Reign of Giants expansion, PS Vita touch controls for navigating maps and more, and all of the latest updates available on PS4/PC, such as the multi-leveled caves and the discoverable ‘Adventure Mode’.

Here’s a rundown of everything included within the Reign of Giants expansion, with Reign of Giants also planned for release on PS4 very soon:

Along with the original version of Don’t Starve, you’ll also get the Reign of Giants Expansion included! So Vita players will get access to the original nine characters and two new additions. Play as Wigfrid, a stage actress who went a bit too far with method acting on her latest role, an ancient Valkyrie, or Webber, a young boy who lives inside the spider who tried to eat him long ago.

The Reign of Giants expansion adds new seasonal challenges including the torrential rain falls of spring and the blistering heat of summer. You’ll also get new procedurally-generated biomes filled to the brim with new creatures and gatherables that will either help you survive — or kill you. Oh, and Giants.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the PS Vita version of Don’t Starve is whether or not it will include cross-buy. As Klei’s Community Manager Corey Rollins puts it, don’t expect cross-buy, but there may be an upgrade feature:

We’re still working out the details, but we’re looking into options to let existing players upgrade to the Vita version. Because Don’t Starve: Giant Edition on Vita includes the DLC and Don’t Starve PS4 was given away on PS+ at launch, it’s a bit trickier and we can’t do cross-buy.

Rollins then replied to someone asking about cross-save and trophies:

Since Don’t Starve: Giant Edition on Vita includes the DLC we aren’t able to do cross-buy/play/save. So the trophies list will be separate. I’m not sure if they will have any changes made to what they are just yet, but at minimum, they will be the same or similar and earned separate from the PS4 version.

You also shouldn’t expect multiplayer in the Vita version:

Since the Vita version includes the Reign of Giants expansion, and has been optimized specifically for Vita, it’s very unlikely multiplayer will come to Vita. We’re still trying to figure out what’s possible for PS4 and our PC playable Alpha won’t be ready until late August(ish). So we still have a long ways to go before we can lock down any new MP news.

And if you were hoping Mark of the Ninja would come to PlayStation, Rollins said:

Since Mark of the Ninja was a Microsoft published game (Don’t Starve is self published by us!) it likely won’t make its way to PS3/PS4/Vita in the foreseeable future. But, while we’re not working on it actively, we think there’s still a lot of unexplored potential in the world of sneaky ninja goodness.

How much would you pay for Don’t Starve on PS Vita if there was an upgrade option?
