Ask PSLS – Favorite Genre of Video Game

Ask PSLS is a feature that sources questions from our community of readers via TwitterFacebookthe forums, and even your emails. If you have a question for the staff to answer, contact us at any of those channels and you could be featured on the next Ask PSLS, with the possibility of winning a prize for being chosen!

Not just as an excuse to post a picture of Kevin Butler on a horse, this week’s Ask PSLS comes to us from user SNOWMANFLURRY in our forums

“What’s your favorite genre? Why? Personally, for me, it’s sandbox, action games, like GTA or Minecraft. What about you wonderful people? Why do you like those genres?”

From shooters to RPGs, the PSLS staff has their preferences and their reasons why. Read on to see Cameron turn into a cheerleader for his genre of choice, Dan to make up a genre of his own, and the rest of the antics that the staff gets up to as we answer your weekly questions.

For multiplayer, it’s first-person shooters for me. I just love all that leveling, studying the maps, killing a good number of enemies.

As for single-player, it’s usually third-person action adventure games. Case in point: the Uncharted franchise, God of War, and the rest. Not only are these games normally graphical powerhouses, but their gameplay mechanics are something that’s both familiar and fresh.

R to the P to the G… spells RPG, with a J in front, just so we are clear… Ok, that was totally gay but I think you get my point. Yea I love shooters and adventure games, or even sports games for that matter, but my true heart beats for RPGs from that little place called Japan. I have to emphasize Japan, because Western RPGs are pathetic beyond belief and cause me to wish for an apocalyptic event to take me away.

Where genre’s used to be clear cut and defined, it’s not so obvious these days. A lot of games are coming up in the in-between spaces of the genres, mixing elements from a variety of them in order to make that game exactly what it needs to be. In that respect, I love the RPG trait, which I consider the ability to level up, spec out, and customize your character as you progress. There is nothing quite like unlocking that new power or equipping that great new piece of gear. I also love real time strategy games, and would love to see the likes of Command and Conquer or Starcraft use the touchpad on the DualShock 4.

For some reason, simulation games are my favorite. I love them so much that I think my love has blinded me and I really can’t explain to you WHY I love them. Maybe it’s because I get to live vicariously through whatever simulation game I’m playing, filling many different shoes and testing my ability at controlling a wide range of variables. [Ed. note: The Sims 4 released this week, and as you might expect, she is thrilled.] Aside from sim games, I agree with Dan. I care more about the content, so I suppose drama. I am attracted to creativity and emotion I guess.

I find that it is particularly difficult for me to narrow down a “favorite genre” simply because there are so many great games that are classified in various ways. My default genre is usually shooters, but I rarely consider them memorable experiences. Games like Journey, Beyond: Two Souls, The Walking Dead Season 1, Mass Effect, The Last of Us, and The Wolf Among Us are examples of titles that are significant to me, much more than any Call of Duty or Battlefield I have played. With that said, I would have to say that even though my go-to is shooters, my favorite genre would have to be less about the style of gameplay and more about the content, so drama, if I had to pick one.

My favorite genre has to be sports games. I was disabled in a car wreck almost 20 years ago and I can’t do the things I could before then, so living vicariously through a virtual baseball or football game is as close to playing sports as I can get. While I do enjoy a great adventure game and some FPS or TPS action, my heart really belongs on a baseball diamond.

I’m a huge fan of third-person action adventure games. They usually have the best stories, and some of the best in-game worlds to explore. My favorite games in the genre range from the Uncharted series to some of the Assassin’s Creed games.
