The VOTE: Evolving Franchises or New IPs and Spiritual Successors?

The VOTE allows you, the PSLS community, to cast your vote and determine once and for all which choice is definitively better. This is for all the marbles, and any other voting sort of analogies that you can think of. Feel free to discuss your choice in the comments below, but remember to keep it civil. We’ll have new votes every Wednesday, with results from the prior week posted at that time, so be sure to check back and make your voice heard.

Remember last week’s question about RPGs? Well it’s time to find out what everyone thought. Out of 433 votes, 39% said that they preferred Western RPGs while 61% settled for Japanese RPGs. Whichever camp you land in, it’s clear that there are a ton of great games coming this generation for both genres, so it’s an exciting time to be an RPG fan in general.

This week, Battlefield Hardline released and many thought that it could have benefited from not being attached to the Battlefield name, as that now ties creative freedoms to fitting in with the franchise, though the tie to the name may also give it some clout and attention it wouldn’t otherwise get. On the other side of the coin, we have Bloodborne releasing soon, a game that is a spiritual successor to the Souls series of games, but does not share the name, so there are no limits to how different it can be, as it is the beginning of an entirely new IP.

So where do you stand? Do you you want to see your favorite franchises grow and evolve, or would you rather see developers learn from those franchises but apply the ideas to the unrestricted freedom, but the unknown void, that a new IP offers? It’s time for your voices to be heard, in this week’s The VOTE!

Would you rather play an entirely new IP or an evolution of an existing IP that feels new? in PlayStation LifeStyle’s Hangs on LockerDome
