One of the most highly anticipated PS5 RPGs has gotten some huge updates. Dragon Quest XII, the next entry in the legendary RPG series, has some new information. This includes a new name, spin-off, and changes to the upcoming game.
The next mainline Dragon Quest game is getting some changes
Square Enix recently held a livestream event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic Dragon Quest series. In it, the company gave an update on Dragon Quest XII, revealing that the game’s new name would be Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The game was previously known as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, but according to executive producer Yosuke Saito, development on the game has been completely restructured.
While the game originally seemed to be aiming for a darker tone, the new version of the game looks to be much more in line with previous Dragon Quest entries. Saito noted that, throughout the development of The Flames of Fate, it became clear they needed to start things from scratch.
“We’re hard at work on XII, but due to a reshuffle of the team and a restart of development, it’s going to be a bit longer until it’s in your hands,” said Saito. “Work on the original version, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, hit a lot of hurdles along the way. But as we kept talking with Mr. Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start from scratch. It was a major decision, but I believe it was the right one to ensure the next Dragon Quest game will be one that all you fans of the series will really love. As part of this new direction, we’ve also changed the game’s logo and subtitle.”
The new footage of the game shows off a much more colorful and grand adventure. We’re treated to a new look at our protagonist, a spiky-haired warrior wielding a sword and shield, before being thrust into gameplay, which takes place across a litany of different biomes. Due to the changes in Dragon Quest XII, no release date was given for the game.
Alongside the changes to 12, Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, a spin-off of the franchise for the PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, and PC. The game follows dual protagonists Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and also has no official release date.
