Could Unrevealed DLC Characters Be Planned for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2?

The Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 beta was this past weekend, and if you’re even half as much a fan of the first game as I am, you probably played quite a bit of it yourself. In addition to the multiplayer game modes, the beta featured access to the Backyard Battleground, a new hub world area that allows you to easily party up, test out characters, and jump into multiplayer matches with ease.

While exploring around the Backyard Battleground, I came across a curious sight that puzzled me quite a bit: an empty character slot in the stats section of each base. You can see what I am talking about clearly in the video above.

For a bit of background, Garden Warfare 2 will launch with the four characters per side  returning from the first game, and three new characters for each faction, for a total of seven for each team (I am not including character variants in this count, just the main characters). What’s odd is that the video I captured above shows each base laid out to showcase eight characters, with one empty spot next to an old character for each side.

If the designers knew that they were only going to have seven characters, why design this display area in such a way? Why not design it to showcase seven characters? Is this extra empty spot indicative of plans for unrevealed DLC main characters to come later down the line (the first game added character variants as free DLC, but no additional main characters)? Or am I reading way too much into this?

If there are going to be completely new characters for the game, what plant and/or zombie do you want to see added to the roster? Feel free to speculate with me in the comments below, or just tell me that I’m crazy for looking that deeply into that suspicious empty character space.
