September 2016 Digital Sales Report: Destiny #1 on Console Thanks to Rise of Iron

Tracking firm SuperData revealed today that worldwide digital revenue in September 2016 increased 5% year-over-year to $6.2 billion. Although Mobile (up 11% to $3 billion), Free-to-play MMO (up 6% to $1.5 billion), and Pay-to-play MMO (up 12% to $267 million) grew, the console market fell 14% to $493 million.

Here’s the top ten grossing console games by worldwide revenue for September 2016, according to SuperData:

Thanks to the release of Rise of IronDestiny revenue rose from $7.2 million in August 2016 to $59.1 million in September 2016, putting it at #1.

“Over the past few years, AAA console publishers have become increasingly dependent on additional content releases to extend the lifecycle for major titles,” SuperData says. “Activision Blizzard has had the greatest success perfecting this formula with heavyweight franchise Call of Duty. Since April 2016, Call of Duty: Black Ops’s additional content revenue has never dipped below 80% of total revenue.”

After generating $78 million in AugustNo Man’s Sky is nowhere to been on the console or PC charts in September.
