February is upon us, and that means Sony’s big first-party title, Horizon Zero Dawn, is almost ready to assault everyone. Given how big the Killzone franchise is for Sony, Guerrilla must have impressed the publisher a lot for them to shelve it for a new IP.
While post-apocalyptic, open-world gameplay is nothing new, the fact that Horizon Zero Dawn isn’t about zombies or the like is, in itself, quite unique. Guerrilla has instead opted for lush jungles with robo-dinosaurs as the enemies from what we’ve seen so far. Just what has us excited for Horizon Zero Dawn ? Hit play in the video above and see for yourself.

Horizon Zero Dawn Feature

Horizon Zero Dawn
Welcome to Jurassic P—I mean, Horizon Zero Dawn.
-
Post Post Apocalypse
Taking place a full millennia after the fall of humanity (presumably due to the rise of artificial intelligence), Horizon explores a mythic and mighty world that is at once familiar and unique.
Also, a new industry buzzword! Yay?
-
Tribal Fusion
In essence, the remnants of our species have been knocked back to our primitive roots, and it's understood the majority of the human population within Guerrilla's new IP will be divided into tribes.
-
See Those Mountains?
You play as Aloy, a tribal outcast who knows a thing or two about loosing arrows. Story details are still scant on the ground, though it seems the animalistic machines that our sharpshooter hunts for resources and the like will act as the crux. Built on a modified version of the Killzone engine, the vivid color palette and stylistic tendencies of Shadow Fall can be seen in Horizon's world.
-
Hunt, or Be Hunted
Mind you, not all of the robotic machines are hostile. Much like the E3 trailer illustrated, Horizon Zero Dawn will also be populated by benevolent AI. In fact, Guerrilla hints that there is a kindred spirit between these dino-bots and our protagonist, and that's a relationship that will be explored throughout the course of the story.
-
New Means of Play
While Aloy faced the Thunder Paw head on during the E3 demo, a behind-closed-doors demonstration revealed that players will be able to approach the beast in a variety of different ways. Not feeling particularly confrontational? Simply set up a booby trap around the Grazers and lure them into it, thus giving you those precious canisters without much fuss. Well, that's if things go according to plan.
