April 2017 NPD: Nintendo Switch & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Rule the Month

Citing NPD data, Nintendo has announced that the Switch was the #1 best-selling system in April 2017, moving more than 280,000 units. This brings the Switch’s two-month total in the US to more than 1.19 million.

Sony and Microsoft didn’t say how well the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sold last month, but Nintendo did add that “April sales of Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems (more than 68,000 units sold) combined to make up almost half of all hardware sales across all dedicated video game systems.”

Looking at software, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the best-selling game in April 2017, moving more than 460,000 physical copies (an additional 90,000 copies were sold digitally, according to Nintendo’s estimates). Since the NPD’s reporting period for April 2017 ended on April 29, this means Mario Kart 8 Deluxe achieved those numbers in just two days.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the 3rd highest-selling game in April, and Nintendo also said that 1-2 Switch and the digital-only Snipperclips saw strong sales.

We’ll have to wait for the NPD’s full report later this month to find out the 2nd best-selling game in April, with the two likeliest candidates being Ghost Recon Wildlands and Persona 5.
