When Kyrie Irving, the cover athlete for NBA 2K18, was first traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics this week, the NBA 2K Twitter account gave a one-word response and quoted their original cover athlete announcement:

A day later, 2K’s Jason Argent issued a statement to Game Informer, revealing that, while the timing of the trade isn’t great, they’ll eventually issue a version of NBA 2K18 with Irving in a Celtics uniform on the cover.
“This isn’t an unprecedented event, a cover athlete being traded – but it’s certainly interesting timing with 2K18 being released in less than a month,” Argent explained. “The good news is that as the most authentic and realistic basketball game on the market, we’re used to being nimble and responding to changes in the NBA. Fans should be thrilled to know that we will issue a version of 2K18 featuring Kyrie in a Boston Celtics uniform at a later date.”
He didn’t say if the updated cover would be offered for free to existing owners, or if it would only be for new buyers.
NBA 2K18 releases on September 15 in Europe and September 19 in North America for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Pre-ordering in North America will get you early access on September 15. If you can’t wait until then, a demo will be available on September 8.
