God of War Director

New God of War Upgrade System Detailed

In a recent interview, the director of the upcoming God of War game discussed how the game’s upgrade system has been overhauled and essentially built up from scratch. Cory Barlog spoke to the Official PlayStation Magazine for their October 2017 issue, and revealed that the development team behind God of War aimed to “leave behind” the games classic upgrade path mechanic.

Instead, Barlog said the team worked on “a way to contextualize” the upgrading system, with their ultimate goal being to create a system that was more fun. As a result, the game will feature the duo of Brokk and Syndri – the pair of dwarves who created Thor’s hammer, according to Norse mythology – and they will be responsible for upgrading Kratos throughout the game.

According to Barlog, the duo is there “to help you upgrade as well as develop your combat perspective for the two main characters.” Barlog went on to discuss that the two dwarves work well with the overall theme of the game, as they are in a “family feud” themselves. The pair apparently haven’t spoken to each other in 50 years and “complain about each other and blame each other for the loss their ‘talent’ and their abilities.”

As players make their way through the game, they will learn more about the pair, says Barlog. “Through the interactions between them you are able to fully understand and actually help change the arc for each of these characters.”

God of War is slated for release sometime in 2018 for PlayStation 4.
