Sony Music Creates New Publishing Label, and Their First Game is Coming to Switch
Sony Music Entertainment announced today that they’re starting a new game label called UNTIES. Despite being a Sony project, the new label won’t exclusively released on PlayStation systems. In fact, several of the games they’re working on are not announced for PlayStation 4, and are currently only slated for PC. Their first title will be released on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.
Here’s the official announcement:
Sony Music Entertainment has created a new game publishing label called UNTIES, in order to penetrate the ever-expanding video game market with indie games, which are continuing to draw attention even within Japan.
Recent progress in the game development world has made it possible for even small-scale production teams to create high-quality games. The evolution of digital publishing has also made it possible for creators to deliver their own titles to consumers all around the world, which spawned an indie game movement centered around North America.
Conversely, this has created an unfortunate side effect where certain creative, unique titles end up getting buried in the market without getting the proper exposure they deserve. UNTIES hopes to unearth high-quality titles like these and utilize SME’s vast entertainment business wisdom in order to expose them to as many consumers as possible. UNTIES will also handle PR and sales on multiple platforms.
Where does the name UNTIES come from?
– Unleashing unique games and unparalleled creative talent unto the entire world.
We intend to free creators from the myriad ties that bind them when it comes to publishing their games. We also vow to make free, limitless publishing a reality.
The studio’s first release will be Tiny Metal, an Advanced Wars-style strategy game that is releasing November 21 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch & PC. The game is developed by AREA35, a new studio that is led by Hiroaki Yura. The title is powered by Unreal Engine. They also have three other titles in development.
We’ll have more on UNTIES and their other upcoming games soon.
