Metal Gear Survive Single-Player Will Require Online Connectivity

According to the official website for the upcoming third-person action game Metal Gear Survive, the game will require online connectivity in order to play both the multiplayer and single-player aspects of the game.

This might not come as a surprise to most considering that it’s 2017 and nearly every console is always online at this point, but it’s still a fairly big thing. According to Konami, the reasoning behind this is due to Metal Gear Survive allowing players to carry over progress and rewards:

Metal Gear Survive is composed of two main modes: Single Player and Co-op. Single Player takes you through the story of Metal Gear Survive while learning fundamental gameplay elements. Single Player lets you explore a strange ruined world as you seek answers and a way to return home. These skills will be put to the test in online Co-op mode. Progress and rewards obtained in both Single Player and Co-op mode carry over and apply to your character across both modes.

There will undoubtedly be fans who aren’t happy about this, but the explanation that Konami put forth isn’t exactly crazy. If gear and progress has to carry over through modes, it stands to reason the game has to be online during those moments. Still, this likely won’t sit well with many people who were already upset with Konami for other reasons.

Some may want to dismiss Metal Gear Survive as a sort of cash grab by Konami, but it’s clear that a lot of effort has gone into making this a worthwhile spin-off. It certainly helps to have the Metal Gear Solid Vgameplay as an incredible base to start off with, but this new cooperative riff on that is a fresh experience. It’s coming along very nicely as its early 2018 release nears, and I can’t wait to see what the full game offers.

Metal Gear Survive is set to release February 20, 2018.
