Super Animal Royale Review – Cute But Deadly (PS4)

The battle royale genre is going strong lately, with plenty of games adding in the beloved mode to their online presence. Those games however tend to be on the more gritty side, so enter Super Animal Royale, which takes cute and cuddly animals and has them attacking with all sorts of nastiness, taking out anyone that comes within their proximity. Developed by Pixile Studios, this free-to-play game is a lot more fun than it seems at first appearance. Our mini Super Animal Royale review starts now!

Super Animal Royale is pretty much your typical battle royale game, where you join into a match, parachute in, grab your weapons, and try to be the last surviving player. This is either done solo, in duos, or squads of four. What really works here is that it never takes very long to get into a game, with the longest I have waited being about a minute to start the game and land on the island. Speaking of, the island that you are landing on has all sorts of different areas, with deserts, frozen areas, heavy woods, and more. While in these different regions, you can really feel the difference, especially during combat. Running around near the frozen palace makes your character kind of glide on the ice, for example.

Weapons available during your time in the game are a collection of the usual suspects and some interesting additions to spice things up. Of course there are shotguns, pistols, and rifles, with these varying by rarity. You can also pick up body armor, health drinks, and grenades. Where things get a little different are with items such as skunk bombs and masks, along with hamster balls and giant emus to ride around in. The skunk masks for sure come in handy, as when the field shrinks, the areas outside of the main circle become a toxic field of skunk spray. These let you survive just a bit longer outside of the circle.

Customization is a big part of Super Animal Royale. As you play more and hit certain goals, you will unlock outfits for your animals, new weapon skins, and of course new animals to play as. Things are very much themed to fit the animal world—if that wasn’t evidenced enough by the title—with swords that can be giant carrots and more. You can even customize your umbrella that you float in with at the beginning of each round. You can spend money of course on certain costumes and cosmetics, but that is to be expected with a F2P game.

Overall, Super Animal Royale doesn’t really do anything groundbreaking, but it is still a fresh entry into the battle royale genre with its cute animal theme and the ability to quickly get into games without much waiting around. Cross play adds a lot of possible players to the pool and what’s here in the package works and it’s fun to play.  The game does just enough to keep you coming back for more without being such a huge time commitment.
