Double Fine New Projects

Psychonauts Developer Double Fine is Already Working on Multiple New Projects

Double Fine Productions, the developers of the Psychonauts series, state they are already working on several new projects after the release of their latest game Psychonauts 2. The company released an update on the crowdfunding platform Fig, informing fans that the studio would split up into several teams to work on individual projects. However, it notes that it will continue to track support tickets in order to send people their physical rewards.

Psychonauts 2 released earlier this year after a 16-year hiatus. Critics praised the game for its unique level designs, sense of humor, and various accessibility options (as we noted in our own official review). Psychonauts 2 also received several nominations during The Game Awards 2021, as well as this year’s Golden Joystick Awards. Notably, Double Fine studio head Tim Schafer revealed back in June 2021 that the game was made entirely without crunching.

In the crowdfunding update, the studio states that Psychonauts 2 was a “chance to revisit and reimagine the classic that launched our studio into the future.” While the team believes that they “stuck the landing”, they also believe that the next games will be an opportunity to experiment with new ideas.

Psychonauts 2 has essentially wrapped up as a project although there will be tweaks and fixes as we move forward. The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy. We like experimentation here at Double Fine. Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more.
