Uncharted Movie off to a Great Start Despite Average Reviews

The Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg led Uncharted movie has released in 15 countries outside of the United States, where it has already raked in $21.5 million in the opening weekend. According to stats shared by Variety, Uncharted earned $6.4 million in the UK alone, $4.5 million in Russia, and $3.5 million in Spain. This is quite a feat considering the movie got a lukewarm critic reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds an aggregate score of 52 percent.

How Uncharted fares against other movies

Among what is described as “pandemic-era” movies, Uncharted ranks above Eternals by 12 percent, above Black Widow by 18 percent, and above Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings by 21 percent at a similar point in time. Uncharted’s budget reportedly stood at $120 million, so it looks like the movie is well on track to earn a sizeable profit especially considering that it has yet to release in numerous countries. Other than the U.S., Uncharted has yet to release in Canada, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea.

Opinion: Uncharted movie is the validation Sony needs

Zarmena writes… In recent years, Sony has indicated an interest in aggressively expanding into movies and television shows. Uncharted was long assumed dead after it changed directors numerous times and couldn’t seemingly come out of production hell, but not only did it release, it’s already garnered a handsome revenue. Sony probably feels more confident now than ever before, and I fully expect to see more of its first-party franchises getting the movie and TV treatment. The Last of Us’ HBO show is up next, and we’ve only heard promising things so far.

In other news, PlatinumGames has said that it’s open to being acquired if it’s guaranteed creative freedom, and our in-depth review of the highly-anticipated Horizon Forbidden West is live (spoiler: we loved it).
