PSN Incorrectly Congratulating Users for Unlocking Gran Turismo 7 Platinum

If you’ve received a series of emails from Sony congratulating you on unlocking the Gran Turismo 7 platinum trophy despite never having played the game, don’t worry. You’re not the only one. Over the weekend, PlayStation Network went wonky again and triggered panic among users who thought their accounts may have been hacked. I was one of the lucky recipients of said emails and breathed a sigh of relief after spending a good few minutes ensuring that my PSN account was intact.

Gran Turismo 7 platinum has yet to be unlocked

At the time of this writing, Gran Turismo 7’s platinum trophy has yet to be unlocked. Perusing PSNProfiles reveals that there are a number of dedicated players close to it, with up to 97 percent completion. Nevertheless, the email I received claimed that I unlocked the Platinum in two hours and two minutes, and that seven percent of players have unlocked the coveted trophy. Random. The other two emails welcomed me to Gran Turismo 7 and congratulated me for “finding my line” after having played 18 hours of the game. One problem: I’ve never played Gran Turismo 7.

What caused users including myself to panic was the emails coming from an official source, addressing players specifically by their usernames, suggesting that our accounts may have been compromised. A quick Google search led me to several Reddit threads where I found that this isn’t a one-off thing. However, it happened to me and many others for the first time so if you find this article while Googling to figure out what’s going on, just know that you’re safe. It’s only PSN being PSN again.

In other news, Gran Turismo 7 is getting review bombed after struggling to stay online and implementing atrocious microtransactions, and one of the last undiscovered Easter Eggs in The Witcher 3 has been found.
