Sony is rolling out PS4 system software update 13.04 starting today, and unlike PS5 owners, it’s not all great news for last-gen players. Partially confirming reports that it plans to shut down more PS4 features in 2026, the company is sending players system-level notices encouraging them to upgrade to the PS5 now.
PS4 system software update 13.04 patch notes (January 28, 2026)
“We’ve made some security fixes to the system software,” today’s patch information reads. In other words, Sony is limiting PS4 system updates to winding down support for various features while simultaneously combating jailbreaking and exploits.
Reports emerged last year that Sony planned to shut down several PlayStation Network features on the PS4 in 2026. For its part, the company only confirmed that it will start prioritizing current-gen players when it comes to its PS Plus subscription going forward.
However, yesterday, PS4 players started receiving messages on their consoles that pretty much confirm the aforementioned reports, stating, “Now’s the perfect time to upgrade your PS5 console.” The message goes on to list some hit PS5 games from 2025 and highly anticipated upcoming games that won’t be available on the PS4, basically implying that last-gen players are missing out.
It really is the end of the road for the PS4.
